Every Mac Pro packs the power of two multicore Intel Xeon processors. Choose two 3.0GHz quad-core "Clovertown" processors... the fastest Quad-Core Intel Xeon available... for groundbreaking, 8-core power.
Or configure a quad-core Mac Pro with a pair of dual-core "Woodcrest" processors at 2.0GHz, 2.66GHz, or 3.0GHz.
Install up to four 750GB hard drives in four independent, 3Gb-per-second Serial ATA drive bays using a cable-free, direct-attach system.
For enhanced data protection and performance up to 304MB/s,2 choose the optional Mac Pro RAID card offering hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, and 0+1.
Every Mac Pro graphics card supports dual displays and at least one 30-inch display. For added performance, you can choose upgraded, workstation-class graphics cards that can also power two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays.
Install additional PCI Express cards in the three full-length PCI Express expansion slots, which feature a tool-less bracket for easy installation and removal of cards.2
Add up to 16GB of 667MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered memory... a memory architecture that's up to 256 bits wide and allows for greater memory capacity, faster speeds, and better reliability.
The four drives are SATA - and can be easily added and removed - But NOT while the computer is turned on. These drives are not hot-pluggable, or hot swap-able. The unit can come with OPEN BAYS with the "sled" or mounting bracket included and empty. As you need to you can add your own SATA drives. Just mount your new drive into the supplied bracket. The drive carrier in the Mac Pro is a simple piece of aluminum that fastens to any standard SATA drive with four screws on the bottom of the drive and allows the drives SATA and power connectors to mate directly with a small backplane.
The Mac Pro ships with 4 drive carriers allowing the end user to add storage as they wish with off the shelf drives. These are different from the drive modules for the XServe, which convert the power and SATA into a single connector. You can move drives from one bay to another, as long as the system is turned off when you do so, and they are not part of a RAID set. If you use the supplied software and create a Software RAID, you cannot move the drives between bays. The Mac Pro supports software RAID 0 and 1, in a multi-drive configuration.
The standard configuration of the Mac Pro includes one (1) 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). The SuperDrive in the Mac Pro:
The Mac Pro includes one (1) additional optical drive bay. This enables the addition of a second 16x SuperDrive, as a CTO option. When configured with two SuperDrives, the Mac Pro supports simultaneous reads/writes and disc-to-disc copying.
In a dual-SuperDrive configuration, to eject the first disc tray, using the standard Eject key on the keyboard. To eject the second disc tray, use Option-Eject.
The Mac Pro is the first Mac to use FB-DIMM (Fully-Buffered DIMM) memory, a new memory architecture from Intel. FB memory offers significant performance gains over standard DIMM memory, further contributing to the overall performance of the Mac Pro.
The standard configuration of the Mac Pro ships with 1GB of memory, installed as a pair of 512MB FB-DIMMs in two (2) of the eight (8) available DIMM slots.
When adding memory to the Mac Pro, DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size and speed, from the same manufacturer. The Mac Pro is expandable to a maximum of 16GB of memory.
The 4 PCI-Express expansion slots are numbered from Bottom to Top. Slot #1 is double-wide and support high-powered, double-wide graphics cards without sacrificing multiple PCI slots. (Recall on the Power Mac G5, a double-wide card installed in Slot #1 blocked access to Slot #2.) On the Mac Pro, PCI Express Slots #2, #3, and #4 are available for single-width PCI Express expansion cards. There is a new utility called the Expansion Slot manager that allows monitoring of these slots.
As of Mac OS X 10.4, the dual gigabit ethernet ports that are on the Mac Pro can be linked via Port Aggregation.
You can Configure the Mac Pro with one to four graphics cards as long as you stay below the combined system provided 300W power to all PCI Express slots combined. Also, a DVI to VGA adapter is included with the Mac Pro, to connect the Mac Pro to a VGA projector, etc.
5 USB inputs divided on front and back.
The Mac Pro ships with Photo Booth and Front Row software pre-installed. Photo Booth works with an external iSight camera connected to the Mac Pro and Front Row can be operated via keyboard, as a remote is not shipped with the unit.
The Mac Pro is exactly the same physical size as the Power Mac G5. The Mac Pro is an air-cooled system. The Power Mac G5 Quad was a liquid-cooled system.
